Technics have been the industry standard turntable for decades. Any vinyl DJ would expect to be playing on 1200’s when playing in a venue. I remember back when I was in school one of my friends had bought a pair of Technics 1210’s which were about £500 each. I was lucky enough to get to use them. At the time I could not afford my own and even when I bought my first pair of decks I could not afford Technics 1210’s which I do regret.
Not long ago the Technics line of turntables was discontinued. The SL-1200 MK6 was released back in 2007! It was only recently that they were resurrected to much fanfare but at an unbelievably high price.
The SL-1200G costs £2500 each and were targeted more to the home listener rather than the DJ. There was even a special edition for the 50th anniversary called the SL-1200GAE priced at £2700. This is an astounding amount to pay for a single turntable. Released in the summer of 2016 it is hard to see many being sold especially in pairs but some will undoubtedly have made it in to the hands of audiophiles.
The current entry level turntable costs £1200 and has the SL-1200GR label which would still be out of the price range of 99% of DJ’s. They are however absolutely stunning looking in both black and silver but that is not where the substance ends. Technics turntables are reliable and possibly the best sounding vinyl turntable you will find.
Whilst they are certainly marketed to music enthusiasts with large vinyl collections. Those listeners that have such an ear for music they can tell the difference in sound quality. These turntables are not just record players. They are a piece of music industry history with a decades long past of music technology perfection.
With high torque and direct drive motors added to the vibration damping materials the sound is astonishing and once again the envy of the industry.
On Monday 7th January 2019, Technics will be making an announcement and all evidence points to the release of the SL-1200 MK7. The event will be streamed live from Las Vegas at 20:00 – 23:00 PST.
